What is your idea and how will it impact your indicator?

Playworks exists because, for many low-income children, recess is not a fun experience. Recess is where bullying happens, fights break out, and student become too upset to absorb lessons taught in the classroom. A 2009 nationwide Gallup Poll of 2,000 elementary school principals revealed that 89 percent of discipline-related problems occur during recess and lunch. (“Gallup Survey of Principals on School Recess”, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2010.) Principals block out time every day to deal with discipline problems from recess, and teachers deal with the aftermath. Additionally, many low-income children live in areas where safety is a concern. They often come from neighborhoods challenged by poverty and crime with limited opportunities to engage in healthy play with their peers. As a result, these children come to school not knowing how to appropriately engage with peers which contributes to a playground experience riddled with conflict. Students who return to class angry, frustrated and scared cannot learn.
However, the American Academy of Pediatrics notes in its 2012 policy statement The Crucial Role of Recess in School, that “Recess serves as a necessary break from the rigors of concentrated, academic challenges in the classroom. Equally important is the fact that safe and well-supervised recess offers cognitive, social, emotional, and physical benefits that may not be fully appreciated when a decision is made to diminish it. The American Academy of Pediatrics believes that recess is a crucial and necessary component of a child’s development and, as such, it should not be withheld for punitive or academic reasons.” (http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/131/1/183.full.pdf+html)
Playworks has a solution to the chaos on the playground that maximizes recess and uses play as a transformational tool for educators and children. We believe that building a high-functioning, positive recess climate directly affects the creation of a positive school climate. A 2010 report entitled School Climate Brief from The Center for Social and Emotional Education, founded at Columbia University, states “Research supports the notion that positive school climate promotes students’ ability to learn. A positive school climate promotes cooperative learning, group cohesion, respect and mutual trust. These particular aspects have been shown to directly improve the learning environment.”
Playworks places a highly trained program coordinator at each of our partner schools to run games and physical activity before, during and after school, teaching respect, inclusion, empathy and problem-solving through play. Playworks also trains student leaders, through the Junior Coach program, to resolve conflicts on the playground and beyond. Playworks gets all kids in the game, regardless of background, skill or physical ability. By using play, a universal activity accessible to every school child, Playworks creates a positive school climate where students know what is expected of them and their peers. As a result of this improved learning environment, students can do better in school. According to Playworks’ year-end surveys of teachers and staff, our partner schools have seen an increase in class participation, teachers have been able to reclaim an average of 19 hours of teaching time that would have otherwise been lost dealing with student conflict and students have experienced a dramatic reduction in bullying and disciplinary incidents.

What are some of your organization’s most important achievements to date?

In 2012, Playworks was selected as one of the Social Impact Exchange's 100 Index in the category of education. The S&I 100 Index consists of high-impact nonprofits that have been carefully vetted through a comprehensive selection process. More than 150 experts have participated in a cross-sector collaborative effort to identify and assess the nonprofits that have been selected to be part of the Index.
In 2011, Forbes magazine selected Playworks Founder and CEO Jill Vialet as one of its Impact 30: a list of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs. The magazine defines “social entrepreneur” as a person who uses business practices to solve social issues. The selection was made by a panel of blue ribbon experts, tasked with identifying “social entrepreneurs who are tackling the world's most intractable problems.”
In 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the nation’s leading public health foundation, invested $18.7 million in Playworks because it believes that Playworks’ program improves children’s health. In 2012, RWJF invested an additional $8.5 million in Playworks to continue backing the growth of our program.
In 2013, Jill Vialet, CEO and Founder of Playworks, was awarded the James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award. The James Irvine Foundation Leadership Awards annually recognize Californians who are advancing innovative, effective solutions to critical state issues. Since 2006, awards have been given to 45 recipients, both individuals and groups, working in a wide variety of fields, including education, health, agriculture, economic development and the environment.
Playworks featured at the Clinton Global Initiative in 2009. The mission of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) is to turn ideas into action. Established in 2005 by President Bill Clinton, the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) convenes global leaders to create and implement innovative solutions to the world's most pressing challenges.

Please identify any partners or collaborators who will work with you on this project.

Playworks’ primary partners are the Southern California elementary schools we serve. In our fourth year, Playworks SoCal currently provides our model physical activity and play program in 26 low-income elementary schools serving approximately 15,000 children in the Los Angeles area daily. Our partner schools consist of: Firestone Academy, Gateway Academy, Huntington Park Elementary, Inskeep Academy, Junior Collegiate Academy, Juanita-Tate Academy, Slauson Academy and Titan Academy in the ASPIRE network of charter schools; Bennet-Kew Elementary, Highland Elementary, Kelso Elementary, Payne Elementary, and La Tijera Elementary in the Inglewood Unified School District; Aldama Elementary, CNCA – Burlington Academy, Florence Griffith Joyner Elem

Please explain how you will evaluate your project. How will you measure success?

Playworks SoCal’s program commitment to success is reflected in our in-depth evaluation process and organizational fidelity to tested program components. Playworks’ evaluation methods include:
-Annual surveys of principals, teachers and staff at Playworks partner schools to assess the effectiveness of our program. These surveys measure the impact of Playworks programming on student behavior during recess, in the classroom and overall. As a result of the feedback we receive, Playworks updates and improves our program components to better fit the needs of every partner school.
-Recess Observation & Reflection: conducted throughout the year by the Playworks SoCal Program Directors, Program Managers, and Program Coordinators to help create program consistency across all schools;
-Junior Coach Assessment & Training: assessment conducted by Playworks Program Coordinators at the beginning and end of the Junior Coach Program with leadership training conducted throughout the year;
-Student Engagement Survey: conducted by teachers at the beginning and end of programming to measure changes in level of student engagement in a random group of students; and
-Program Quality Visits: conducted by Playworks’ Director of Program Quality which allows Playworks to identify programmatic trends in order to adjust training, support or program components to ensure high quality programming from all cities.
Playworks has been proven effective in improving school climate by virtually eliminating bullying with a program based around inclusive play and vigorous physical activity. In 2012, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation’s leading public health foundation, contracted with Mathematica Policy Research and Stanford University to conduct a rigorous, randomized control evaluation of Playworks. The study found that as a result of Playworks teachers had more time for teaching, students behaved better both at recess and in class, and schools felt safer and experienced less bullying. Read the entire study through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s website. (http://bit.ly/R1uSN9)

How will your project benefit Los Angeles? Please be specific.

Playworks inclusive approach to play gets all kids active during recess and offers more opportunities for vigorous movement throughout the day. The link between physical activity and children’s performance in school is becoming more and more clear. As reported by the New York Times in April, 2011, “...the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published a meta-review of 50 studies and found ‘substantial evidence’ that school-based physical activity ‘can help improve academic achievement, including grades and standardized test scores.’ Educators need not worry about losing precious teaching time: the report found ‘no evidence that time spent in recess had a negative association with cognitive skills, attitudes or academic behavior.’” A randomized controlled trial of Playworks found that children in Playworks schools spent more time at recess engaging in vigorous physical activity than children in control schools.
Every year, as one of our internal evaluation methods, Playworks conducts surveys of principals and teachers at our partner schools to help us learn more about the impact of our program. Survey results from our Southern California partner schools for the 2011-2012 school year showed that:
-91 percent reported an increase in the level of participation in academic activities;
-89 percent reported an increase in students’ abilities to focus on class activities;
-78 percent reported a decrease in the incidents of bullying during recess;
-81 percent reported that the transition time from recess to classroom instruction decreased, which enabled teachers to reclaim at least 19 hours of teaching time over the course of the school year;
-92 percent reported that Playworks had a positive effect on overall school climate.
We expect similar or better results in the coming school years in Southern California.
Playworks positively impacts children’s physical, cognitive and social development. Through our five-component program (recess facilitation, in-class game time, the Junior Coach Program, before and/or after-school programming, developmental sports leagues), Playworks transforms the playground into a place where students learn essential skills such as teamwork, conflict resolution, empathy, and fair play.
Educators and staff at our partner schools tell us that we have helped them create a safer, more inclusive school climate with student leaders who are able to engage respectfully with peers and adults and contribute to a positive learning environment. Playworks' ultimate goal is to create an educational environment where students learn how to interact with their peers in appropriate and respectful ways, practice safe and healthy behaviors, take on meaningful leadership roles, and become the focused learners their parents and teachers want them to be.

What would success look like in the year 2050 regarding your indicator?

With every school a Playworks school, children will be excited to attend school each day. Teachers are free to teach and children to learn. Without the fear of violence and exclusionary behavior at recess children engage in various games and activities. Children learn teamwork and leadership skills that they use not only at recess but in the classroom and in the community. Educational success will not be determined by your zip code as all schools will be safe, fun and rich with educational opportunities.

As another league comes to an end, I am honored to get to spend time with the kids at my school. Giving them the chance to participate in sports & friendly play at a young age is great. Through leagues I feel I have developed long lasting relationships with the players families as well.

Being greeted by parents & families from other leagues after they have been over for a while is truly rewarding.

My school has become a center for creative, exercise intensive play thanks to PlayWorks!. A historic, major challenge for all schools, including ours, is keeping students engaged in positive activity during recess. Then PlayWorks arrived! On the FIRST DAY it was a significantly better place. Discipline issues on the playground disappeared, children became engaged in fun games that are "brain activating". Teachers and parents are THRILLED! Quality instructional time increase significantly. PlayWorks has transformed my school and it is transforming the culture of our community. Just this morning a family with a special needs child visited my school to potentially enroll. When they saw "Coach" working with children, they asked if they could transfer ALL their children to our school! I have had parents tell me that when they were looking for a home to settle down in, they chose our neighborhood when they saw the PlayWorks sign on our school gate. PlayWorks magic touches the soul of the communities it serves!

The playworks program at our school has changed our school. We were astounded just by the improvement dueing first month that it was implemented. Our Principal had been dealing with student behaviors ona an hourly basis and now it rarely ocurrs. Now that the students have the skills to deal with problem situations in an appropraiat maner and a sequence of steps to take to solve the problem prior to an alteractio ocurring. Playworks realy works. Our Coach Luciano I is the best coach ever.

Playworks has drastically reduced the number of discipline referrals during recess and lunch. Our students are more actively involved in physical activities and return to class ready to learn. The Junior Coach program has helped some of our struggling students to gain confidence, become good leaders, and raise there academic skills.

Seeing Junior Coaches attendance records improve so they do not miss recess is a wonderful feeling. They want to be at school and are sure to have all of their classwork assignments and homework done so they are able to be present at recess.

Implementing an "assistant coach" program (1st-3rd graders) Prepares them to be incredible Junior Coaches. It also spreads Playworks core values throughout the entire school at a younger level & understanding. Including the younger students has been a huge impact on my yard, they beg me daily to be an assistant coach & role model for classmates!!

As the Enrichment Chair and the PTA President at Bennett-Kew Elementary, it is a great honor to have Playworks at our school. Not only has this exemplary program inspired students to become more active and physically fit, but it has inspired the students to live a more healthier life. Other benefits from the program include the Service Projects that help beautify our school, the Junior Coach Program that develops student leaders, and the commodore it cultivates amongst parents, students and staff. Playworks has allowed the students to discover their inner talents as athletes, leaders, dancers, peacemakers, artist and of course, scholars. Everyday, it is great to see that the students are eager to get to "Game Time" and participate in sharing a moment encouraging their peers to be strong, healthy, and physically fit students. Thank you, Playworks, for being such an awesome program at our school and a great support to the parents and the staff.

David is a 2nd grade student who struggled with academics. His teacher had tried many times to connect with David, and help him approach grade level specifically in reading and math, however, she had begun to get discouraged. When she tried to offer David support she was met with tons of resistance, and he even told his teacher "I don't like you, and I hate school!"
One day during a Playworks Class Game Time Session, both the Coach and the teacher noticed that not only was David having an amazing time, but he was really fantastic at the game being taught. The Coach and the teacher had a great idea! Since David claims to not like school, lets see if making him a leader at this game he loves so much helps. And help it did! Once we made him a leader, and began to use that as an incentive, David's participation in class went up, he began to focus more on his classwork, and he even started being receptive to the extra help that his teacher was offering. One year after all of this, David became a Playworks Junior Coach and got to help out on the playground in an official capacity, and all of his test scores where at grade level or above!

Education is the right of every child. Playworks is an essential part of making sure that educational experience is meaningful and fun by creating a positive school climate where all students feel included and safe to play and learn. Having Playworks at schools allows kids to not only increase their physical activity everyday but also learn vital life long skills like teamwork and conflict resolution. Kids at Playworks schools are taught how to resolve their own conflicts, treat each other with respect and see their classmates as teammates. Kids only experience elementary school once in their lives and Playworks creates an environment for that to be the best experience possible for all kids.

Hearing such amazing stories such as these from our parents really shows the affect in our community! When kids start to enjoy going to school, that means not only a brighter future for the children but a brighter future for society! Los Angeles needs Playworks through direct service or training in all of our schools so that every child has the opportunity to be excited about going to school!

Over the past four years I have witnessed the amazing impact Playworks has had on several different schools in Los Angeles. I've witnessed first hand as a group of students who in September came to the playground and mostly stood around, but by December they came out excited, full of energy, and ready to participate in safe, organized games. I've seen teachers express mountains of gratitude over the precious of hours of class time that Playworks has allowed them to recover. And I've seen principals work diligently to do whatever they can to make sure that Playworks stays on their campus because they couldn't imagine their school without all of the amazing changes and energy that the program has brought to their school.

This seems like a great program! Recess is supposed be a fun time, but a lot of kids just don't know how to get along with each other. Working in after-school programs I witnessed a lot of disrespect and interactions between students that made me feel really uncomfortable. Kids would scream at each other and slap at each other and misuse equipment. I also know that physical activity is key for young people (for all people) in order to function properly and focus. A program that uses recess to teach kids how to get a long and work them out? I'm sold!

When children are taught how to resolve conflict at a young age, they take that with them for the rest of their lives. Playworks is not only making a difference with our children today, but let's think long term. Playworks is giving children skills that will help them for a lifetime!

Playworks is revolutionary in its approach to enabling students to learn and improving the state of education in LA. It’s difficult to tackle the larger, underlying issues that fuel challenging and conflict-ridden learning environments in under-served schools. Playworks does this with ease, through a comprehensive approach that focuses developing character and social-emotional skills. The drastic reduction in violence, bullying, and conflict in classrooms effectively translates into teachers regaining valuable lost teaching time every single day, as classrooms are no longer the grounds for chaos and fights, and rather -- a place to actually learn.

Playworks not only creates a safe environment for children in schools but also creates a environment where teachers are able to do what they do best- teach! Playworks programming enables children to solve their own conflicts which is translated into the classroom. When Playworks kids are able to solve problems that arise in the classroom, they do not disrupt teaching time. Teachers then are able to teach without interruption and students are able to learn without the same interruptions! Additionally, less kids are sent to the principals office which means that they are in class learning the newest math problem or reading a great book.

In listening to teachers, principals, coaches and students, I have consistently heard about how Playworks improves the educational environment at low-income public schools. The stories come from communities all over Los Angeles and Southern California, but they have consistent themes. Teachers have more time to teach because they spend less time working through disputes arising at recess; principals see far fewer referrals due to fights on the yard; kids gain crucial dispute resolution skills and become more confident in their own worth. Last week, I met 2 such kids. One of them, Jose, barely spoke English when he started school last year. Now, he is a junior coach, teaching games and dispute resolution to younger children, in English. Destiny is bright, but became disenchanted with school and began ditching. The coach at her school made her a junior coach, and now she comes every day, because she sees being a junior coach as her "job" and she wants to be coach of the month. As a result, her academic performance has blossomed.

Perhaps this is the most telling sign about how valuable Playworks -- principals with tight and shrinking budgets seek us out and can always manage to find the funds necessary to pay the school

In one of the most rigorous scientific trials to find an effect on bullying, researchers from Mathematica Policy Research and Stanford University have found that a Playworks recess can transform school climate, paving the way for less bullying and more focus on learning. http://www.playworks.org/research-reveals-playworks-reduces-bullying

Playworks is one of the few, if ONLY organizations that can point to solid gold standard data that proves they prevent bullying. If you want to see academic achievement, you need schools where every child can learn. Playworks creates that environment!

Kids on the recess field have stopped yelling "You LOSE" to one another, which discouraged many from playing again. After establishing positive language and bringing in the Playworks Junior Coaches, all the kids are now starting to say positive encouraging statements to keep all their friends playing and having fun. Playworks allows me to make a positive impact on children's respect for one another.

My fourth grade special needs student who is part of the Junior Coach program leads games, is able to get the attention of her peers, resolves playground conflicts, and helps keep the playground safe. Playworks has given her the opportunity to become a role model and a leader in her school community.

Playworks is one of the few programs that actually moves the needle on vital issues such as changing school climate.

In the year 2050, success in education would look Playworks in every elementary school changing school climate so that every child would have the opportunity to excel academically, schools would be safer with less bullying, children would learn how to resolve confilct, and teachers could do what they do best, TEACH! If every child went to an elementary school that partnered with Playworks they would be given an opportunity to excel in an environment that supports learning because Playworks creates an environment where children not only feel safe at school but are excited about going everyday. Our future depends on our children's success and it starts as early as elementary school.

Our Junior Coach Leadership program continues to be a big success for us. As a Program Manager, I visit schools throughout South LA. On a recent trip, I saw a pair of Junior Coaches gathering up equipment after helping their coach with a class full of younger students. They were both BEAMING! Just glowingly happy. Curious to know, I asked why. They told me that they
