What is your idea and how will it impact your indicator?

:

Levitt Pavilions envisions a LA 2050 in which the community as a whole—parents, children, young adults, seniors—comes together in welcoming outdoor settings to experience the joy of arts experiences open to all. We believe that access to high quality arts experiences shouldn’t be reserved for those who can afford to buy tickets—but should be made available to everyone. We have already made tremendous strides to achieve our vision—each summer over 100,000 Angelenos of all ages and backgrounds enjoy 100+ free concerts at Levitt Los Angeles in MacArthur Park (www.levittla.org) and Levitt Pasadena in Memorial Park (www.levittpavilionpasadena.org), adding vitality to public spaces that were once neglected and nurturing an appreciation for the arts in this great city we call home.

However, in the wake of drastic funding cuts to arts education in Los Angeles-area public schools, Levitt believes we could – and must – do more. Tens of thousands of youth are missing out on opportunities to engage more deeply with the arts—compromising an invaluable part of their overall growth as individuals and members of society. Levitt Pavilions proposes to help fill this void by greatly enhancing Levitt L.A. and Levitt Pasadena’s popular free children’s series. Through the introduction of a hands-on arts learning experience before each children’s show, consisting of free, interactive workshops taught by highly skilled teaching artists in a welcoming and supportive environment, children will gain a deeper appreciation of that day’s performance inspiring their overall interest in the arts.

Both Levitt L.A. and Levitt Pasadena have had amazing success with the children’s series presented as part of the overall Levitt concert seasons, reaching 20,000 children every summer. The beauty of Levitt’s children’s series is that it encourages active participation. Because each Levitt performance venue is located in a welcoming, outdoor setting featuring a grassy lawn, children run freely, dance and express themselves. Every Levitt concert is a reason to celebrate community and to appreciate the rich culture of music that thrives within greater Los Angeles. Our mission of “community through music” is most often on display at Levitt L.A. and Levitt Pasadena’s children’s concerts. It’s heartwarming to witness the sheer joy of children as they run up to the stage to be closer to Levitt artists.

The My LA 2050 grant will give Levitt Pavilions the opportunity to extend and deepen children’s Levitt experiences through weekly pre-concert workshops from late June through August 2013—on Wednesday nights in Pasadena and Sunday afternoons in MacArthur Park. These hour-long workshops will offer a fun and hands-on way for children to learn about music and opportunities for self-expression. Teaching artists will present interactive programs that are in sync with the program being presented on the stage that day. We envision that the 20 children’s concerts (10 concerts at each venue) will represent moments in a child’s life when they begin to foster a sense of appreciation for music and experience the joy of creating and experiencing music in a communal setting. Through making an instrument, trying out cultural dances, creating murals, learning a new song and singing along with others, this supplemental interactive experience will add a rich new dimension to children’s lives. Based upon the attendance at the children’s programs in previous years, we anticipate that approximately 20,000 Los Angeles children will benefit from this program in 2013.

Our project best fits in the Arts and Cultural Vitality indicator, yet we also heavily impact the area of Social Connectedness and even Environmental Quality. Each Levitt venue is located in a city park, enlivening the communities the Levitt program serves by transforming neglected outdoor spaces into cherished destinations. We recognize that live music has always been a social connector, and that free, live music in welcoming, outdoor settings possesses the unique power to break social and economic barriers. By providing hands-on arts experiences for children and their families, Levitt will foster an appreciation for the arts and demonstrate the value of the arts as an integral component of vibrant cities. These experiences will inspire future generations to ensure the arts remain a vital part of Los Angeles.

What are some of your organization’s most important achievements to date?

:

Levitt Pavilions has developed an innovative program model, leveraging public/private partnerships in cities across the country to transform neglected public spaces into welcoming destinations through the power of free, live music. While all performances are free, all Levitt artists are paid a competitive fee to perform, ensuring excellence. Levitt venues serve as catalysts for change in a community by reclaiming green spaces, activating underused public spaces, & breaking social & economic barriers that often preclude access to the arts.

There are now six state-of-the-art Levitt pavilions in places as diverse as Los Angeles & Pasadena; Memphis, Tenn.; Arlington, Texas; Westport, Conn.; & Bethlehem, Pa. Each Levitt Pavilion is a community destination. Levitt’s open lawn settings encourage people to mingle, strengthening social connections.

But it wasn’t always this way. Consider what Levitt locations used to be:
the nation’s largest brownfield; a problematic landfill; crime-ridden & abandoned parks; & a dormant downtown with little economic activity.

Today, the Levitt network serves more than half a million people each year through 300+ free concerts nationwide. Pavilions are currently in development in Denver, Sioux Falls & Houston, & we are in conversations with nearly a dozen other cities across the country.

The L.A. region is home to two Levitt venues. Levitt Pasadena opened in 2003, reviving an abandoned, WPA-era band shell in the once troubled Memorial Park. The national Levitt organization approached city officials with the idea to renovate the pavilion & create an annual series of free performances featuring acclaimed, emerging talent to seasoned, award-winning artists, using the arts as a vehicle to transform the park. Ten years later, Levitt Pasadena is now a treasured community asset & the park is an active & thriving magnet for families.

In 2007, Levitt L.A. opened in MacArthur Park, transforming this once crime-ridden park into a welcoming destination. The band shell’s renovation served as the catalyst for the overall park’s renewal. Levitt L.A. is the only organization that provides consistent free performing arts programming each year in the Westlake District, one of L.A.’s most densely populated & underserved communities. With 40 percent of the Westlake community living at or below the poverty level, Levitt L.A.’s children’s series gives thousands of underprivileged youth access to exceptional arts programming that would otherwise be cost prohibitive to attend.

Both Levitt venues in Southern California have a proven track record of success, & every year audiences increase. In 2012, both Levitt L.A. & Levitt Pasadena were voted “Best Free Summer Concert Series” by LA Weekly, & Levitt Pasadena was voted “Best Live Music Venue” by Pasadena Weekly. The pavilions are both centrally located & accessible by car, bus, Metro & are in walking distance of neighborhoods.

Please identify any partners or collaborators who will work with you on this project.

:

We will collaborate with the professional staff of Levitt Pavilion Los Angeles & Levitt Pavilion Pasadena (who program both venues), accomplished individuals with a proven track record of success in the presenting field & with a depth of experience in providing quality arts programming to the community.

Renee Bodie, Executive Director,
Eddie Cota, Artistic Director,
Daniel Rizik-Baer, Marketing, & Outreach Coordinator, &
Betty Avila, Community Relations Manager.

We will work with local teaching artists, selected with the assistance of the Education Department at the Music Center of LA County, to identify skilled educators with a specialty in teaching large groups of children through interactive activities.

Please explain how you will evaluate your project. How will you measure success?

:

We will evaluate the success of the children’s series and pre-concert arts workshops in the following key ways. First, we will measure the number of participants attending each of the 20 children’s concerts and the number of children attending the pre-concert workshops. Based upon past seasons of children’s programming, we anticipate that over the course of the summer, this program will serve over 20,000 children and an additional 10,000 adults.

Next, following each children’s workshop, Levitt professional staff and teaching artists will debrief and determine how to enhance participation, refine logistics and evaluate responses to specific outreach efforts.

Finally, to measure success in participation, we will collect qualitative data from a random sample of the participants. The pavilions routinely collect audience surveys in both English and Spanish and this summer’s surveys will include questions about the new interactive programming for children and families in order to receive immediate reactions to the project and measure its success. The surveys will be tallied and the results will be incorporated into a final report to be shared with the funder.

How will your project benefit Los Angeles? Please be specific.

We believe the arts are essential to creative thinking and participation in the arts plays an important role in the development of our children. Thought leaders in education and government officials agree.

Today’s educators, politicians and business leaders spend a great deal of time and resources discussing the pressing need for a trained future workforce in the fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in order for the country to remain competitive in tomorrow’s economy. However, many astute leaders know that a letter is missing in this equation, the letter A (Art and Design), to spell STEAM. The arts are the lynchpin to success in building the workforce of 2050 simply because through the arts, students learn creative problem solving, effective communication, innovative thinking and the ability to navigate complex situations. They become better citizens and professionals across all fields and industries, as well as more thoughtful contributors to society, because they are able to more effectively express themselves and think creatively. As the former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, Rocco Landesman said at the Arts Education Partnership National Forum in April 2010, “The arts provide us with new ways of thinking, new ways to draw connections…and they help maintain our competitive edge by engendering innovation and creativity.” United States Education Secretary Arne Duncan also added, “The arts can no longer be treated as a frill… arts education is essential to stimulating the creativity and innovation that will prove critical to young Americans competing in a global economy.”

In the midst of arts funding cuts in public schools, the Levitt program offers a meaningful solution. All Levitt programming is free of charge and family friendly. We create value across the board because our Los Angeles and Pasadena venues are accessible, conveniently located near public transit, and available to all who wish to participate. By offering first-hand involvement in the arts, Levitt’s program will help build the Los Angeles leaders of tomorrow by providing rich arts learning experiences, and in turn helping to build a better Los Angeles for the next generation.

While the Levitt program is nationwide, two of our six pavilions are located in Los Angeles County – Pasadena (Memorial Park) and Los Angeles (MacArthur Park). A total of 100+ concerts are presented from mid-June to the end of August each year in the greater Los Angeles area – free of charge. The wildly popular children’s programs reach tens of thousands each season, and many families attend these concerts on a regular and often weekly basis. By adding an educational and interactive component to the children’s programming, we will have the ability to engage more youth in Levitt’s work and have them leave the concerts with not only a memory of the interactive activities and concert but also possess an increased appreciation for the arts.

What would success look like in the year 2050 regarding your indicator?

:

For us, success in 2050 would be a Los Angeles with adults (the children of today) and their children participating in, attending, and creating art as an integral part of their everyday lives. Our hope is that through our efforts today, the next generation will appreciate the value of public spaces activated through shared arts experiences. The seeds planted today will be seen in future investments in the arts and the arts will be accessible to all, creating a more cohesive society. In 2050, all Angelenos will have ample opportunities to participate in high quality performing arts experiences. The citizens of Greater Los Angeles will be inspired by and appreciate how music and arts participation makes us all better people; more tolerant, innovative and engaged. This appreciation and understanding will translate into the arts playing a prominent role in our city’s vitality.

Levitt Pavilions is an essential organization that unites us through the power of music and that creates an outlet for people to connect, interact, communicate, share, and simply feel good about themselves. Despite all the technology that allows us to remain “social”, there are still persistent feelings of loneliness, emptiness, and lack of satisfaction with life, which could be the root cause of many problems that we face in America; drug and alcohol abuse, obesity, and crime. When people feel sense of belonging and share things with each other it drives them to a happier, more fulfilled and less problematic life. Community concerts make perfect social and economic sense! Music is food for our soul, body, and mind and Levitt Pavilions does an excellent job with feeding us!

Do you remember the joy you felt when as a child you danced without abandon to the sounds of your first live concert? Remember how in that moment nothing else mattered and the world stood still?
Take a moment to view this video and you will see that familiar delight on the faces of some of Los Angeles' deserving youth. Thank you Levitt Pavilions!

Money is tight - we all know that - so for a family with limited means to be able to attend a professional performing arts event TOGETHER, is a difference maker. . . for the family, for each of its members and for the community. Memories, traditions, values, closeness, all can be created each time they attend an event together at a Levitt Pavilion. And this is at no cost. Please help this invaluable program continue and expand.

The sun is setting and the stars are coming out as friends, families and lovers snack on the delicious assortments of snacks and drinks they've spread across beautifully colored blankets. You can't help but be swept up by the sounds of lively conversation and laughter as the night begins to fall and the lights on the Levitt stage come up! You're welcomed by an excited emcee and then incredible music fills the air! Singing, dancing, swooning with a partner... it all depends on what you've chosen to see and the mood you're in —however one thing that's always consistent is the quality of the performers. From Blues to Rock to R & B to Afro-fusion to Bluegrass and Strings... Levitt delivers it all. All you have to do is choose your company, blankets, snacks and choice spot on the lawn and the Levitt takes care of the rest. Did I mention this beautiful evening under the stars is free and available at least four days/nights a week all summer long? That's why the Levitt is amazing and we must help it continue to prosper! It brings loved ones, community and music together —Thank you Levitt! You've got my support! Charly Emery

Levitt Pavilions is a "child and adult" dream come true. What an amazing outreach to the community through the beauty of music, love and togetherness. This past summer, I had the awesome opportunity to enjoy a performance a week before major surgery -- that helped keep me going through a long recovery (remembering the music & show) and it continues today. There should be a Levitt Pavilion in every city -- because music is universal and we (humankind) are in need to hear the beautiful sound of music for balance of life, etc. Kudos to Levitt Pavilions! They have cracked the "code" to help build and sustain communities through the arts. The Levitt Pavilions reflect a remarkable insight...that free music, in a communal and beautiful setting, brings together a community in ways that few other things can. Liz Hirsch, with her father's passion guiding her, is the embodiment of a benevolent Pied Piper...gathering the diversity and cultural richness that is Los Angeles under the Levitt's spell. This work (and make no mistake...it takes work and resources to pull this off) is to be celebrated, replicated and experienced.

Levitt Pavilions is fantastic! By providing quality music and cultural experiences--most of the time to those who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to partake in such rich programming -Levitt Pavilions contributes to the growth and cultural expansion of individuals and communities alike. As we watch funding get cut for the arts, I feel it's extremely important to support organizations such as the Levitt. Music is therapeutic and often when one attends a concert at one of the venues, they meet people of different backgrounds, make new friends--and have an overall amazing experience. Levitt is a great venue for spreading peace, cultural understanding..and most importantly...GOOD VIBES!

The health of the American people is in decline; the data are shocking. We need to change our eating, our physical activity, our transportation systems and our neighborhoods-- but these changes demand beneath it all, a change--and if you want to change culture, we need art, music, poetry and dance. Levitt pavilions are culture-lifters.

Once crime ridden, considering a trip to MacArthur was unthinkable. It took two years of convincing to get me to attend one of the concerts at Levitt. Once I did, I went back the next week. Levitt transformed MacArthur park. Levitt is the kind of program we need for our city to be vital in 2050!

Levitt Pavilion has been crucial to my development as an artist and a person over the past seven years. As a long time volunteer, I've seen the community of Pasadena grow in its appreciation for the arts, and, in particular, every Wednesday night in the summer concert series I see children's eyes light up with excitement at the music, art, and other fun activities. It would be amazing to be able to expand on the opportunities we offer for kids every week. I don't mind going home after my shift with rainbow colored hands from painting with the kids in the community!

There is simply nothing quite like the Levitt Pavilion(s) anywhere in the world.
Its basic premise is that music and the arts are a universal language shared by all nationalities, races and ages.
The Pavilions are a safe place for each of these constituencies to share a few hours together and to see that we humans are not very different after all, regardless of what language we speak, what color our skin is or if we are toddlers, grandparents or teenagers.
Just what the world needs more than ever now, a place to disconnect from our electronic society and share peace, joy and fun!
A unique concept to support and cherish.

The Levitt Pavilions organization may be one of the finest gifts to the American Public in recent decades. To understand the magnitude of the endeavor this organization has committed to one must recognize the true healing and transforming nature of music. The poet and playwright William Congreve wrote "Music has Charms to sooth a savage Breast, To soften Rocks, or bend a knotted Oak. I've read, that things inanimate have moved And, as with living Souls, have been informed, By Magic Numbers and persuasive Sound......".

In most all of our lives, regardless of age, gender, financial or social status, music has moved the majority in directions ranging from soothing to riotous, from laughter to sobbing and has enabled our spirits to find footing everywhere in between. Where musicians of all genre's have moved us to render an emotion, for the immediate or long term better or worse, those feelings remind us we are truly alive. Regardless if we loved or hated the music, the notes, the expressions, the verbiage, the intent of the artist or the transfer of emotions from the musicians to ourselves we must never deny music gives us pause to feel, to dream and continually let's us know there is so much more to the body, the heart and the soul, than merely the physical makeup. The tones and sounds of music may be universal in their appeal thus free from the borders of nations. The poetry of the creator's words become more individually heart felt. Yet, so much personal solace may be found in the understanding others, in the listening or viewing audience, may feel similarly moved.

I am inspired by the intent and the ongoing actions of the Levitt organization whose goal is to bring live music and the arts to everyone and anyone who wishes to find their way to the growing number of venues around our great nation. Upon our own picnic blankets, folding chairs or benches the Levitt has found a way to make us all equals regardless of our background. Should we the audience be inspired by the music to express ourselves in the form of dance, the Levitt grounds becomes our dance floor. Instead of "Dancing With the Stars" the Levitt provides each of the ability to "Dance Under the Stars". Regardless if you are a ball room expert, can dance hip hop or simply feel the urge to tap your toe to the music, the Levitt will be your home if only for a few hours. Audience participation just seems to happen at each and every event.

The Levitt is building community one venue at a time. For me,The Levitt is the single greatest Non Profit I have had the pleasure of participating in. Though a vote on this site is huge, please review other, on line, information about the Levitt Pavilions organization. If you are fortunate to have a Levitt Pavilion's near you please set a date to go and see what this organization is about. If a venue is not located near you please contact the organization to see if you can assist in making sure Levitt Pavilions continue to pop up all around the Nation. The event's are free of charge so why not give yourself permission to experience, live and in person, musical genre's you might not normally be comfortable with? If not, choose the genres you prefer by reviewing the lists of hundreds of performers scheduled for each site and make a date with Levitt Pavillions.

Regardless of the location of the venue the events are incredibly safe as music really has inspired the audience to simply come and enjoy the event. Most all of us talk about uniting the peoples of our nation and the world. Here is an organization who is actually putting their monies where their mouths are and are clearly accomplishing this amazing feat. Once you have had a chance to experience these free concerts and perhaps learn and bit more about the organization you might understand why I feel so moved to ramble on with my comments. It is also possible you just might be moved to lend help in any way you can to this worthy and wonderful organization. A vote here would be a wonderful start.

Then I found out there were 50 of them! We were sold. My daughter was in middle school at the time and an aspiring singer. Not only did she have the chance to sing on stage, but we also volunteered. We were so happy to be a part of the crowd several nights a week, especially on children's night! The joy and community on those nights is particularly special. Families from all walks of like sit (or dance!) side by side. . . all grateful for the opportunity to expose their children, family and friends to music at an early age and nurture an appreciation and love of the arts. My daughter is now a junior vocalist at LACHSA, a prestigious performing arts high school. The Levitt Pavilion has been an important part of her life and and we continue to be huge fans! I cannot think of another organization that is more deserving of this opportunity to expand its' reach even further. Please vote for the Levitt Pavilions!

I am a Los Angeles resident and have attended events at both the Pasadena and MacArthur Park Levitt Pavilions. The first thing I love about being there is the wonderful sense of community. People from all walks of life coming together to relax, be with each other, and listen to music. The second thing I love is the music!! . Levitt does an amazing job bringing new and exciting musicians to the public. Being at these events is always a joyful and uplifting experience.

Access to the arts should be a right, not a privilege - and for that reason I both love and support Levitt Pavilions. I've watched the Pavilion transform MacArthur Park, and am still amazed at the way that it is able to unite diverse groups of people from the neighborhood and all over the city in order to enjoy the performing arts in a safe, beautiful, and soulful environment. Expansion of Levitt's children's programming would be a major victory for our city.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the Levitt Pavillion in Pasadena! I especially liked to see that many families were present for the concerts. It is nice to see several generations gathered to celebrate and enjoy music together. The programing and community development efforts offered by the Goldhirsh Foundation are built as a partnership with the community.

Levitt connects people and communities through the power of music, providing free access to the arts for everyone. It is fulfilling a fundamental need for individuals, and revitalizes cities by activating outdoor spaces. People of every ethnic background and age demographic come together at Levitt, and engage, sharing and celebrating our individuality through the joy of music. Levitt Pavilion is a stunning example of how to activate, engage, and revitalize a community.

Providing free access to the arts, particularly to children who wouldn't otherwise be able to experience them, is so vitally important to the individual, community and overall health of the city. Levitt Pavilions is a shining example of how community life can be transformed by bringing people together through live music. Through music we can all find a common beat to dance to.

Music is the universal language and the universal connector. The Levitt venues use music as a vehicle to reinvigorate public space and bring people together on a basic human level of providing time and space to socialize, interact and learn from one another. Out of the diversity of the audience on the Levitt lawn, grows education, awareness, understanding, appreciation and respect for the music, the arts, the city, and most importantly, the people.

Levitt venues also offer people an opportunity to reclaim their communities. The Levitt brings hope to the lives of individuals and families who often face the day to day struggles of access to education, public safety, affordable housing, healthy food, safe recreation, let alone an opportunity to participate in the arts. The Levitt lawn not only helps to level the playing field, but it literally tilts the field in the direction of those who just need a welcoming invitation to make a difference in their own communities.

My first experience at the Levitt was at a children's program last year! It's wonderful to see how much fun the children and their families have at the Levitt! An amazing program and a gift to the community. The kids of today are the future leaders of LA. Let's support their creativity with this program!

I've been a Pasadena resident for four years, and I LOVE going down to the Levitt each and every summer. It's already the perfect evening community destination. But bringing more programs to local kids? Let's do it! What an awesome way to bring the arts back into the hearts of community for generations to come. :-)

This program revitalizes and builds communities. It not only provides a service, it serves as a role model for other community programs. Its reach is broader than the individuals it touches--what a great return on investment!!

Economic disparity contributes to the hope gap in our youth. The Levitt program helps bridge that gap, we deliver the promise of a better tomorrow today. We light up imaginations and build dreams. Levitt celebrates our common shared humanity and breaks down barriers in competitive, cold urban cultures
The Levitt model works. I have the the privilege of visiting our venues across the country; at each one the warmth and joy is palpable. Ask any kid at a Levitt what the experience means to them. Watch Levitt bring out the kid in grownups. Levitt is incredible! Help us reach more families and make our communities more livable and vital for all.
